Periodically we get inspired to record some of the more memorable days of trips that we have made. They serve to remind us of the things that we have done, the places we have been to and the people we have met and if we do not record them we tend to forget great chunks of the times we have spent away.
For those viewing these diaries we hope you find them interesting but they are more likely to be of interest only to our family and friends.

Our first trip away from Mazamet is in the Dodogne, some three and a bit hours drive to the north. We have based ourselves in Sarlat at the Le Couleuvrine hotel on the edge of the medieval centre. The hotel is well placed, but a little tired. We booked a 'superior room' but there must be super deluxe superior rooms because our room doesn't exhibit a lot of superiority. The main superior attribute is the fact that from the door into the room there are two sets of stairs to reach the room itself and then there is an internal staircase to a further level, all of which seems to be very... + details

Yesterday was one of domesticity interspersed with a certain amount of eating and drinking. We haven't severed all contact with Australia, yet. The iPad, with one or two apps, is a wonderful device. Being able to track Collingwood's progress against Fremantle was a delight to behold and we will continue to monitor Collingwood's 'progress' over the coming weeks. Using the ABC iView app, coupled with another app which allows us to pretend to be in Australia, enables us to be selective in viewing some of our favourite programs.  Watching George Brandis struggle over the government's proposal... + details

We returned to Albi after having had a wonderful lunch just a few days earlier. This time we planned to see the art of Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa amongst other things. We missed the exhibition of his art which took place in Canberra a few months ago but it was much better to see it in the place of his birth. The Musee Toulouse-Lautrec is in the precincts of the cathedral and consists of three rooms of his art. The room which contained his art of the brothels in Paris was fascinating. The paintings treated the subjects with a high degree of respect without ever making a... + details

There is much to do around Mazamet and we have started to explore the surrounding area before taking a few trips further afield. A day trip to Carcassonne started by stopping off at the medieval village of Hautpoul in the Black Mountains. Hautpoul is a small village on a rocky peak overlooking the town of Mazamet in the department of Tarn.  It is believed to have been founded in 413 by a Visigoth king and is considered as the entrance to the Montagne Noire and its vast forests.  The village provides a view into the world of the medieval settlement and how they lived and worked. It is... + details
